Seachem PhosGuard is a high-capacity filtration media designed to rapidly remove phosphate and silicate from both marine and freshwater aquariums. Its unique spherical shape ensures optimal water flow and maximum contact with the media, enhancing its efficiency and capacity. PhosGuard is highly porous, providing a large surface area for adsorption, and is effective in preventing the growth of unwanted algae and maintaining a clean, healthy aquarium environment. It is not recommended for use in phosphate-buffered freshwater.

Key Features

  • Dual Action: Combines aluminum oxide and granular ferric oxide for superior phosphate and silicate removal.
  • High Efficiency: Rapidly reduces phosphate and silicate levels.
  • Large Binding Capacity: High porosity and surface area for maximum adsorption.
  • Durable: Maintains physical integrity under mechanical stress.
  • Versatile: Suitable for use in canister filters, media chambers, box filters, and high-flow areas of trickle filters.

Why Choose Seachem PhosGuard?

  • Effective and Fast-Acting: Quickly reduces phosphate and silicate levels, preventing algae growth and maintaining water clarity.
  • High Capacity: Offers a large binding capacity due to its high porosity and surface area.
  • Durable and Reliable: Maintains its integrity under mechanical stress, ensuring long-lasting performance.
  • Trusted Brand: Seachem is known for its high-quality, scientifically-backed aquarium products.

Initial Setup:

  1. Preparation:

    • Rinse Thoroughly: Before adding PhosGuard to your aquarium, rinse it thoroughly with dechlorinated water to remove any dust or debris. If using tap water, treat it with a water conditioner like Seachem Prime to neutralize chlorine and chloramine.
    • Pre-Wet: Pre-wet PhosGuard by adding it to a double volume of freshwater, followed by a rinse. This helps to prevent any initial heat generation when it contacts water.
  2. Placement:

    • Filter Media Bag: Place the rinsed PhosGuard in a filter media bag. This makes it easier to handle and maintain.
    • Filter Installation: Insert the media bag into your filter. PhosGuard can be used in canister filters, media chambers, box filters, or any high-flow area of a trickle filter. Ensure it is placed in an area with good water flow to maximize its effectiveness.
  3. Initial Dosing:

    • Amount: Use 85 mL (1/3 cup) of PhosGuard for every 200 liters (50 US gallons) of saltwater or 400 liters (100 US gallons) of freshwater. Adjust the quantity based on your tank size.

Maintenance:

  1. Regular Testing:

    • Frequency: Leave the product in place for 4 days, then test phosphate or silicate concentrations.
    • Replacement: If the concentration of the component you are trying to decrease has not dropped to around 0.02 mg/L, replace the PhosGuard. Otherwise, leave it in place until levels begin to climb again.
  2. Regular Cleaning:

    • Frequency: During regular filter maintenance, rinse the PhosGuard media bag in aquarium water that you have removed during a water change. Avoid using tap water directly as it can reduce the effectiveness of the media.
    • Debris Removal: Gently shake the media bag to dislodge any accumulated debris. This helps maintain optimal water flow and filtration efficiency.
  3. Replacement:

    • Longevity: PhosGuard can be left in the filter until phosphate or silicate levels begin to rise again. Continuous use of small quantities is better than intermittent use of larger quantities.
    • Partial Replacement: If you notice a decline in filtration efficiency, consider replacing a portion (about 25-50%) of the PhosGuard media. This helps maintain consistent filtration while introducing fresh media.
  4. Monitoring:

    • Water Parameters: Regularly test your aquarium water for phosphate and silicate levels. This helps ensure that the chemical filtration is functioning effectively.
    • Adjustments: If you observe elevated levels of these compounds, check the placement and cleanliness of the PhosGuard media and adjust as necessary.
  1. How often should I replace PhosGuard?
Replace PhosGuard when phosphate or silicate levels begin to rise again, typically every few weeks depending on your aquarium’s conditions.

  2. Can I use PhosGuard in a reef tank?
Yes, PhosGuard is safe for use in both freshwater and saltwater aquariums, including reef tanks.

  3. Will PhosGuard affect my aquarium’s pH?
No, PhosGuard has minimal impact on pH levels due to its low ash content.

  4. Available Sizes?
    250ml ,500ml & 1L
